Serves 8 (serving size: 1 1/4 cups)

Potatoes contribute starchiness and silky thickness, while sweet carrots and salty ham balance out the peas' light, earthy flavor. Leftovers fare well in the freezer, so say hello to your new favorite make-ahead soup. Garnish with parsley and additional pepper, if desired.

How to Make It

Step 1

Layer peas and next 9 ingredients (through ham) in order listed in a 6-quart electric slow cooker. Gently pour 6 cups water over top. Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours.

Step 2

Remove ham hocks from slow cooker. Remove meat from bones, and cut into bite-sized pieces; discard skin and bones. Discard bay leaf.

Step 3

Coarsely mash soup to desired consistency, adding additional hot water to thin, if desired. Stir in chopped ham. Divide soup evenly among 8 bowls; top each serving with 1 tablespoon sour cream.

My grocery store was out of hocks, so I used both parts of a smoked turkey wing. Otherwise followed all other directions exactly, and it came out perfectly.

This was a very good split pea soup.  I served it with homemade onion bread.

Super easy slow cooker recipe, the kind you just throw everything in , set the timer and it comes out delicious. (You do have to chop veggies:). Couldn't get ham hocks so used 4 slices of bacon chopped instead. After reading comments, cooked for 10 hours but might have worked with 8 hours - will have to try.

I made this yesterday and it turned out very good. I was worried after 5.5 hours that my peas were still hard and not softening. So I turned it on high for 2.5 hours and that did the trick. I seemed so watery, but after buzzing it with the stick blender it thickened up as it sat. Left overs tonight are far better. I also used a smoked turkey leg as I could not get ham hock. I liked it even better with the turkey! Will always make it that way! Thanks for a great recipe.

I made this recipe exactly as written except used 4 cups unsalted chicken stock and 2 cups of water and used the bone from a holiday ham I had in my freezer.  Delicious and so easy!!  Yum!  Will definitely be making this again

Found this recipe to be excellent -- used smoked ham hocks from my local butcher added a wonderful flavor, although I found there to be no usable meat to cut off when cooking was done.  Followed recipe as written, but after 8 1/2 hours on low, the split peas were still not completely cooked, so I turned crockpot to high for another hour, and then it was perfect.
