"My great grandma's recipe... these cookies have been at all our holiday family gatherings since the 1940s" -Tami Bowman

How to Make It

Step 1

Stir together flour, soda and salt. Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add flour mixture, mixing well. Stir in vanilla. (Dough will be soft.) Cover and chill 30 minutes. Arrange pecan halves in groups of five on greased baking sheets to resemble head and legs of turtle.

Step 2

Shape dough into 1 1/2-inch balls, using a rounded teaspoonful of dough for each so tips of nuts will show when cookies are baked. Dip bottom of dough into unbeaten egg white and press lightly onto nuts; flatten tops slightly.

Step 3

Bake at 350° for 12 to 14 minutes. (Do not overbake.) Cool completely on wire racks.

Step 4

Beat butter in a small mixing bowl at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add sugar, cocoa, and whipping cream, beating until smooth. Generously spread frosting on top of cookies.

I see that NONE of the edits/corrections listed below have been addressed by My Recipes....Common baking sense would be:Combine flour, soda salt, set aside.Cream butter & brown sugar; mix in 1 whole egg & 1 egg yolk plus vanilla, then stir in flour mixture.Proceed from there until time for frosting:Combine powdered sugar & cocoa powder, set aside.Cream 3 Tbl butter; mix in powdered sugar/cocoa mixture; add 1/4 cup whipping cream slowly until of spreadable consistency.

I agree with the other reviewers - please fix this recipe - it has been around since December 2007 and it's still a mess with the instructions missing. As it's written right now - I would not waste my time with it.

The instructions leave out where the sugar and whole egg and egg yolk go and when. Looks good but not worth trying when the ingredients aren't clear as to where they go..... Can there be an edit for this recipe?

The recipe now seems to be complete, but where is the frosting recipe? Please add it so I can try these.

In reading recipe agree that all instructions/steps not included. Will not waste my time trying to figure out what should be done at what point. Looks cute but not worth the effort to figure out.

Unfortunately, there are some important steps missing - like when do the sugars and egg get added? If this is like a traditional cookie dough, then you would cream the butter with the sugars until light and fluffy and then add the vanilla, followed by the egg. Mix well after each addition. THEN, add the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda & salt) to the wet ingredients. Mix until incorporated thoroughly.
