Prep and Cook Time: about 30 minutes. Notes: You can store these bars airtight for up to 2 days.

How to Make It

Step 1

In a large bowl, with an electric mixer on medium speed, beat butter, oil, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in egg, applesauce, and vanilla until well blended.

Step 2

In another bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; stir or beat into butter mixture until smooth, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Stir in oats and chocolate chips.

Step 3

Spread dough evenly in a lightly oiled 8-inch square baking pan. Sprinkle top evenly with granulated sugar.

Step 4

Bake in a 350° oven until pale golden brown, about 15 minutes. Let cool on a rack about 10 minutes, then cut into 1- by 4-inch bars. Let cool completely.

I agree with everyone else. I think there is a mistake with the recipe. My bar looks nothing like what is in the picture. My family loved the taste but I'll look for another recipe.

This was absolutely horrible. I always read the reviews before I make a recipe...for some reason I didn't. I'll never make that mistake again.

Agree with first two reviewers - 15 minutes is not enough baking time. Like them, mine took 35 minutes. I only had 1/4 cup of apple sauce so used 1/4 cup of oil to make up the difference. This is more like a cake than a bar. It tastes good but I doubt I'd make it again. I also threw in 2 handfuls of dried cranberries.

The bars are not very tasty. They took way more than 15 minutes to bake, more like 30-35.

It required a lot more than 15 minutes to cook and when I did take it out of the oven, the middle was still gooey. I probably had to cook this about 25 minutes. It's tasty but I think the applesauce makes it a bit too gooey.
