MyTake: What We Learned This Week—9/23 to 9/29
It's finally time to dust off those roasting pans.
As we close out September, we’ve got two words for you: Comfort. Food. And we’re not talking about complicated, fussy braises or time-consuming pot roasts. We mean the OG speedy, budget-friendly go-to shortcuts and meals that have been there for you through the years to get you through the busiest of weeknights. From our recommendation for the best-ever jarred pasta sauce, to foolproof ways to transform ramen noodles (think takeout-style spicy, flavor-packed Ginger-Scallion Noodles), to our new favorite brand of cookie dough that tastes just as good baked as it does raw, we leaned heavily on supermarket convenience items this week.
We’ve also got fall produce on our mind as we head deeper into fall and cooler weather—which, of course, means it’s finally acceptable to crank up the oven to roast anything and everything (May we suggest starting off with some spaghetti squash?). You’ll need to make sure you’re properly equipped, which is why we rounded up our favorite roasting pans for every kind of cook so you can head into baking season with confidence. We also spilled our secrets for perfectly golden-brown, extra-crispy roasted veggies for a season of wow-worthy vegetable sides and crispy baked potatoes for crowd-pleasing brunches.
Of course, food and kitchen fails are an unavoidable fact of life. After learning about the woman who lost her life savings after getting a new freezer—turns out it’s way more common than we thought to use your freezer to store valuables (among other things)—we also loved hearing about times that well-intentioned “help” from your friends and family members led to major kitchen mishaps.
And if you’re a major Halloween enthusiast, we haven’t forgotten that the start of October means the official kickoff for all things spooky and festive. From Harry Potter-themed desserts, to an exciting new Halloween-themed Trader Joe’s product, to a little help from Pinterest for the cutest crafts, we’ve got your back to make this the most epic (and tasty) Halloween yet.
We also want to remind all of you to stay safe out there as flu season rolls in. Be extra careful with cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen (When’s the last time you checked on that kitchen sponge?), and if you do unfortunately get a bug, you’ll want to stay away from these foods, and make sure to hydrate!
Looking for some fun weekend baking projects and dinner party-worthy meals? This Lobster Roll Pizza is our epic, fresh take on pizza night that we want to shout about from the rooftops. That buttery crust, rich cheese, and fresh herb combo makes the lobster feel even more decadent. And because dessert needs to be just as impressive as dinner, this Classic Boston Cream Pie is the surprisingly doable but stunning finish to any meal—just wait to pour that chocolate ganache right before serving for a seriously show-stopping presentation.
