5 Simple Ways to Fight Hunger on World Food Day

October 16 is World Food Day, an annual event to promote food insecurity awareness established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1979. This year’s theme is “Our Actions Are Our Future.”
An estimated 40 million people in the U.S. struggle with hunger each year, including more than 12 million children. Here’s how you can take action today:
Donate money, as well as food.
Obviously, donating non-perishable and nutritious items to local organizations is always a good use of your time and money. But consider donating money instead of cans next time. Because food banks purchase food in bulk and at discounted rates, a donation of one dollar can purchase $20 worth of food.
Volunteer at a food bank or soup kitchen.
Sorting, packing, or stacking food can make an incredible difference for hunger-fighting organizations and the families they serve. More than half of all food programs run entirely on volunteers, according to Feeding America, so every bit of help is crucial.
People like to hate on social media, but having the ability to share information with all your friends and family at your fingertips is no small thing. Use that power for good! Share hunger statistics or ways to help hunger-fighting organizations—it takes almost no effort and could make an impact.
Advocate for change.
Know where your elected officials stand on hunger issues and vote accordingly. You can also easily urge legislators to visit a food bank with this handy template.
Educate your children.
They are the future, after all. One in six kids face hunger in the U.S. today, so chances are your child has a friend or classmate who is affected. Teach them how they can make a positive change.
