How Fabio Does Breakfast
The super healthy supermodel printed our logo on a piece of toast
Even if you don’t exactly know who he is, you definitely know what he looks like—his chiseled jaw, his flowing, golden locks of hair. He’s Fabio, the Italian model who was everywhere in the 1980s and '90s, the so-called king of romance who appeared on the covers of countless romance novels. And though Fabio might have kept a low profile for a while, he’s back in a big way. These days, Fabio is in control of a giant, yellow toaster called the UnbelievaBot that uses lasers to print images on toast. (This isn’t a joke, I swear.)
Fabio has been a spokesperson for I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! since the mid-1990s, when he famously appeared in a TV ad as an actual chiseled marble statue. He’s partnered up with the brand again for a new ad campaign featuring this one-of-a-kind, high tech toaster and Fabio's biceps. And since I’m a sucker for a man with long hair with a good kitchen appliance, I jumped on the chance to FaceTime with Fabio to find out what he eats for breakfast that keeps him looking so good and if he had any tips for my own burgeoning toast modeling career.
Extra Crispy: What time did you get up this morning?
Fabio: About 5:30.
Is that when you usually get up?
No. I get up at 11, normally. I always have my breakfast around 11.
What do you usually have for breakfast?
Well, it's normally oatmeal with berries. Then I have always, normally, an egg white omelet. I'm a big believer in protein. So egg white omelet with sometimes spinach or asparagus, sometimes tomato and mushrooms, of course cooked with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!, and that's pretty much it for breakfast.
So pretty light.
Sometimes I also have a protein shake.
It sounds like you keep a pretty healthy diet. Do you have any breakfast foods you like to indulge in sometimes?
Most of the time, I'm very consistent. It's always oatmeal. It's always an egg white omelet with a protein shake and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!, and that's normally what my breakfast is.
Do you work out before or after breakfast?
No, I work out late afternoon. I'm not a morning person. I need my beauty sleep.
I mean, it's clearly working.
So you've had this long relationship with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter since the mid-1990s, so I was wondering if you had any favorite breakfast foods from that era that you miss.
Actually, my breakfast, lunch, and dinner—I didn't change much since the 90s. I'm very consistent. I keep very much the same. I believe in a certain way of eating, and so I've been doing that all my life. I've been using I Can't Believe for now 20 years.
Is that consistent way of eating just to stay healthy and fit?
Yes. Exercise and great food. That's the key. And no drinking.
I also wanted to learn more about this toaster.
It's very unique! I don't know if you can see it, right here. Let me show it to you. It's pretty big toaster, OK? But what's unique about this toaster, it's high tech. It's unique and has laser technology, so actually, you can print pictures, images, and writing of whatever you want. So, you can print, let's say, a picture of your face or the company you work for. It's a very unique technology, and it's one of a kind. Today everybody's so into technology, right? Everybody's into the newest and greatest thing out there. Well, right now, it's the greatest toaster on the planet.
Is there anything you're excited to toast on it?
I'm going to show you, in a second. Look here...
Watch this! We're not done yet. You see? [Fabio holds up a piece of toast with Extra Crispy's logo printed on it.] You can print anything you want with this toaster. Send me a picture, and I'll print your face on it.
Has your face been printed on a piece of toast?
Any tips for getting the best angles for your face on a piece of toast?
I don't know. I didn't go for that detail. What about this? [Fabio holds up a piece of toast with his own face printed on it.] Not bad, huh?
Not bad at all. Pretty lifelike.
Now you have to send me your picture so I can print a toast with your face.
Yeah, and then our pieces of toast can be friends.
[Laughs] Just when you think you saw it all, right?
But it sounds like you're not very high tech when it comes to your own breakfast, that you like the basics.
You know, I'm a very high tech guy, but when it comes to breakfast, keep it simple. Keep it very simple. Protein, some simple carbs, and working out. 50 percent is eating healthy and 50 percent is working out. Do some sports.
