Nothing fills my morning with more joy than a wholesome egg dish that satisfies me until lunchtime. Packed with vitamin D and protein, eggs are one of the most famed breakfast choices on the menu, but more often than not, my quality time with eggs are spent making DIY beauty treatments with eggs to put those nutrients directly on my face. Don't worry, I may be left with egg all over my face, but there are no mistakes about that.
Eggs have a long history in cosmetics. In the 1800s, a mixture of lye, potato, and egg were used to straighten afro-textured hair and even before then, eggs were used to make nail polish. Today, egg facials are one of the most popular forms of treating acne. Clearly, eggs are the Justin Timberlake of natural beauty — the talent of a single egg ranges goes far beyond treating pimples. According to sources at Livestrong, eggs can reduce fine lines and actually strengthen the skin's elasticity because they contain collagen. Plus, eggs are loaded with vitamins A, D, and E which not only help alleviate our aging woes, but also help heal and restore damaged skin cells.
Here's how I like my eggs: "vegetarian" fed, organic and free of antibiotics and hormones with a side serving of a certified humane label. I could literally go on for days about the meaning of labels on a carton of eggs, but instead I'll leave it up to you and you can check out a very informative breakdown before you choose your eggs for DIY beauty.
These are a few of my favorite ways to use eggs in my beauty routine. And trust me—you will have an entirely new appreciation for chickens and breakfast.
No one knows the acne blues better than myself; cystic acne plagued me in my teens and came back in full force once I stopped birth control. Fortunately, this eggy face mask is packed with acne-fighting ingredients. Turmeric contains curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory that bring down the swelling of pimples. Ironically, this same component of turmeric that gives it its famous orange color also helps lighten acne scars and even skin tones. The banana is packed with stimulating nutrients and the antibacterial and antioxidant content is great for relieving acne while keeping the skin hydrated. Speaking of hydration, the raw honey is soothing, hydrating, and excellent for blackheads.
Start by cracking an egg, discarding the egg yolk and pouring the egg whites directly into a blender. Place the rest of the ingredients in the blender and turn on for 30 seconds or until you have reached a smooth consistency. I like to let my mask thicken in the fridge before applying it to damp, makeup free skin. Leave the mask on for at least 5 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water and applying a moisturizer. Keep your mask in the fridge as it's highly perishable for future use, discard after 5 days.
Keeping hair hydrated and moisturized can seem like an uphill battle regardless of your hair type. External factors like heat, humidity, wind, and pollutants dry out the hair follicles and scalp making it retain a healthy moisture and strong strands. Eggs can strengthen and condition hair promoting a healthy environment for hair growth.
To make this healing hair mask, mix the egg (with the yolk), aloe vera, and avocado together in a blender. Once the mask has completely blended, turn off blender and transfer to a sealable container. You'll want a thick, smooth consistency to apply on wet, clean hair. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes and rinse well with warm water. For my fellow kinky-haired beauties out there, you can finger detangle or gently detangle with a comb with the mask after about 10 minutes when the hair begins to soften and then rinse with warm water. Only make enough of your hair mask for a week because it's perishable. This mask does such a good job, you'll only need to apply it monthly.
Eggnog is one of the classic beverages that warm our hearts and tummies during the holiday season, and its power of healing holiday blues extends to healing facial blues. This eggnog facial is a great way to gently exfoliate deep into the pores while controlling oil buildup.
Purchase a raw, organic milk if possible; according to sources at BLAHBLAH, milk can boost collagen production, reducing fine lines and the appearance of wrinkles. The cinnamon and nutmeg slough away dead skin cells while adding antibacterial properties to your facial — and what would eggnog be without a little vanilla? For this facial, the vanilla is a key ingredient in balancing the stimulating properties of the spices and calming stressed out skin.
To whip up this facial, crack your egg, leaving out the yolk in a bowl and add milk. Gently whisk until smooth consistency is achieved and add in the spices and vanilla essential oil. Since cinnamon and nutmeg are considered irritants due to their antiseptic nature, do a test patch on the inside of your elbow to make sure no dermal irritation is present. Use immediately on makeup free, damp skin. Massage gently and let your mask dry naturally on your face for a few minutes. Rinse well and follow-up with a moisturizer.
1/4 teaspoon of organic, pure turmeric
2 heaping tablespoons of raw, organic honey
1/2 of an organic banana
1 organic egg
2 ounces of aloe vera
1/2 of a ripe avocado
1 combined 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon and nutmeg
5 drops of vanilla essential oil
1 teaspoon organic milk
